"DigiTech has treated its greatest creation with absolute respect, extending the Whammy's functionality and performance without compromising any of the blipping, stuttering brilliance that made it a legend in the first place".
This month it is the turn of Total Guitar magazine to review the new DigiTech Whammy (5th Generation). The legendary pitch-shifter is awarded the magazine's 'Best Buy' award and a 5 out of 5 overall rating.
"If there's ever a hall of fame for effects pedals that changed the sound of rock 'n' roll - and there bloody well should be - then the DigiTech Whammy has earned its spot".
"This fifth-generation true bypass reboot of the classic Whammy has inherited some of the features from the top-of-the-range DT model (£289 RRP) launched in late 2011. The most important of these is the DT's polyphonic functionality, which allows you to bend the pitch of more than one note at a time".
"Detune a chord and the strings remain in relative tuning with each other as the pitch drops. That's something you can't achieve with a classic Strat vibrato or even a locking Floyd Rose".
"The 5th Gen Whammy gets very close to the spec of the DT for a fair bit less lolly. All the important stuff is present and correct. Okay you don't get the latter unit's full drop-tune function, but the new Whammy's true bypass circuitry, increased intervals menu and mono-and polyphonic versatility more than make up for that shortfall".
"The best news of all is that the Whammy still sounds as great as it ever has".
The full review can be found in the October Issue (232)of Total Guitar magazine on sale now. The DigiTech Whammy (5th Gen) is also on sale now at £199 RRP.
