AKG’s newest offerings of the C 414 are reviewed in this month’s Audio Media Magazine.
AKG’s legendary C414 needs no introduction – it is a tool found in most recording studios and has been used on thousands of hit records; it’s been on stage with artists of every musical genre and is also used by leading broadcast facilities the world over.
The new models, the C414XLS and C414XLII, offer nine pickup patterns which enable users to choose the perfect setting for every application. For live-sound applications and permanent installations all controls can be locked easily for trouble-free use. A Peak Hold LED displays even the shortest overload peaks.
“You may be of the opinion that five patterns are enough for anyone, but any number of critical positioning or acoustic situations can guide you to an ‘in-betweener’, and the addition is significant”.
“The second tweak is a lock mode for the 414 controls. You simply hold down the pattern selector switch for a couple of seconds and all buttons, including the pad and filter selectors, are locked out – even after power has been lost and reconnected. Given the nature of the 414 selector switches (which I do like), this feature is definitely overdue”.
“Other than that, it is right to expect an uncompromising 414 sound and performance. You should expect that the XLS will be spot-on, with a depth that really does make it a great all-rounder. And you should expect the XL II will be crisp and airy – cutting through a dense mix with ease. And that’s exactly what they are”.
