Building on the success of the Perception range of microphones, AKG have added the AKG Perception 820 Tube to the fold. MusicTech magazine have the first review.

AKG’s industry–leading Perception Series of condenser microphones are recognized for their outstanding quality and versatile capabilities at an affordable price. The brand-new Perception 820 Tube delivers real tube quality. It is not only the new flagship model of the Perception Series but also raises the bar in its class of affordable tube microphones.

"In cardioid mode the Perception 820 has plenty of upfront presence and brightness. These have been characteristics of AKG mics since the heady days of the C12 and the Telefunken-branded ELA M250/M251".

"In omnidirectional mode the Perception 820 extends outwards at both ends of the frequency range. The highs acquire a crispy sparkle and the lows gain weight and depth, without boominess".

"Comparing the cardioid and figure-8 settings, the latter isn’t quite as full in the mids and the mono image isn’t as wide, but it’s slightly more upfront and intimate, and side rejection is extremely effective".

"All told, the Perception 820 provides a taste of the classic AKG valve sound, but with a fatter midrange…it has a likeable character that isn’t overly hyped or coloured, so it’s a very user-friendly all-rounder".
