Soundcraft Si Expression digital console expands capability of Leeds University Union live venues

Known for its wide range of entertainment, Leeds University Union operates three popular live rooms, including the 1200-capacity main Stylus as well as subsidiary Mine and Pulse (with respective capacities of 450 and 350).

Having installed a new sound system two years ago, it has always placed high priority on keeping its technical infrastructure at the cutting edge.

However, it was with their burgeoning hire business in mind that they recently purchased a Soundcraft Si Expression 2 mixing console, opting for the 24 mic input capacity in order to be able to service a range of events — from conferences to big warehouse dance parties — on both a wet- and dry-hire basis.

The purchasing decision was taken by LUU’s Technical Manager, Sam Ryder, who joined the University last summer, and who was already familiar with the Soundcraft topology and operating system from his experience using Si Compacts.

“Our technical hire division rents out equipment to commercial enterprise,” he explained. “I considered the options but knew the Si Expression 2 would give us a compact desk with a lot of outputs, and an intuitive interface that anyone can operate. It’s also extremely quick to set up and programme.”

That versatility is also essential when used back at base, as each room can operate standalone gigs and club nights or act as a giant multi-room club event.

“This means we can use the Expression for our own shows in the second or third room, for example on acoustic nights, or with a DJ who has a more complex monitor set-up.”

“The desk is incredibly functional and well priced … and it all just works!” concludes Sam.

The Soundcraft Si Expression 2 was supplied and installed by Adlib Audio, the Union’s long-term equipment supplier.
